Sounds in Film Blog Entry 4

  1. Diegetic Sound- the sound used live during a scene that is kept in the film and helps the audience listen to and focus on what is happening in a scene to understand the central idea. For example, a character speaking, and the sound effect of an object can all be considered diegetic sound.
  2. Non-Diegetic Sound- sound that a character in the film cannot hear but the audience can, for example sound effects, and this allows the audience to feel the suspense going on during a scene.
  3. Ambient Sound- sound that is used as a background noise to help illustrate a setting which helps the audience understand the kind of setting that is approaching to better recognize the plot.
  4. Voiceover- a narrative spoken by a character that cannot be seen in in the scene and allows the audience to understand that the character is voicing over the plot in an opening scene from an outside perspective.
  5. Foley- sounds that are made with objects to create a sound effect for a film, the objects used don't appear to look like the sound created.
